Counselling Alberta

I came to the field of counselling later in life. My early years were spent working in silviculture and agriculture, and while doing this I felt a calling to help people find their place in the world by connecting to the land. Childhood memories doing chores, feeding cows and chickens, running across bales and through creeks, all struck me as something important to remember in our modern world. My latest adventures include learning to square dance, wrestling steers at branding and working with my family to transition my father's farm.
My professional journey has included: wilderness treatment centres for addictions, supporting youth, adults, and families in reconnecting with themselves, each other, and the land. I have also worked with Search and Rescue and been a member of the local volunteer fire department.
With a background in Child Studies (majoring in Counselling) and a Master’s in Social Work, I now work with the Counselling Alberta program to help rural Albertans access affordable mental health support. I understand the unique challenges rural communities face, including the transition between traditional values and modern life, the pressures of farm family dynamics, and the stressors that come with a livelihood so tied to the land and dependent on weather. While personal responsibility and independence are core rural values, I also recognize that sometimes an extra hand is needed to navigate life’s challenges.
My approach is centered on meeting clients where they are, fostering healthy conversations, and providing a respectful space to work through difficult experiences. I specialize in supporting individuals and families with farm family dynamics, suicide prevention, dementia, addictions and farm transitions. I integrate a range of therapeutic modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Gottman Method for couples, Internal Family Systems, Grief Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment Theory, and Polyvagal Theory. I also welcome cultural and spiritual beliefs as foundational elements of the therapeutic process. I strive to provide a space that respects opinions and beliefs, that creates room to work through difficult experiences, and helps people figure out how they can move forward.
