THERAPIST NETWORK MEMBER INTERVIEW: JENNA IBACH

JENNA IBACH

1. why did you want to join the Therapist network at AgKnow?

Farming and agriculture is in my roots. I want to help those who are an essential part of our world. I see how hard the farming community works behind the scenes and sacrifices that are made during all parts of the year.

2. What is your connection to farming?

I was born and raised on a farm. Farming has been in my family for generations. I see the countless of hours needed and the around the clock work that goes into farming.

3. Why does having good mental health on the farm matter?

Good mental health is important for the person, family and community. When we have poor mental health, our entire system is impacted. Farming involves heavy work, including machinery, this can pose a safety risk if we are not aware of our mental health through distractions.

4. FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR ISSUES FACING FARMERS TODAY?

In working with farmers, there are some unique issues they face. Farm disposal, stress, grief and loss, loss of control (loss of crop, livestock, weather), injury, isolation, depression and anxiety.

5. HOW CAN GOING TO THERAPY HELP A FARMER WHO IS STRUGGLING WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH?

Therapy is a unique tool to add to any toolbox. Developing strong coping strategies, understanding what is happening to the farmer and/or family, can lead to resilience. Finding your strengths and leaning into skills you already have will be the start of the healing journey. Education and understanding is also a key part of therapy as it allows the person struggling to understand their symptoms and experiences.

6. HOW CAN YOU HELP A FARMER WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH? WHY SHOULD THEY CHOOSE YOU, WHAT CAN YOU OFFER THEM?

Therapy isn't about just talking rather it is about understanding the problem and getting to know the root. Understanding the lifestyle and sacrifices has allowed me to gain trust with my clients. I meet the farmer where they are at and we get to know their world. I understand therapy and mental health conversations can be tough - validation and understanding is key. I want you to become the expert in yourself.

7. what is your preferred style of therapy? Do you have any specializations?

I use a variety of therapy styles. There is not one shoe that fits all and I hold this mindset in my sessions. Although I am trained in a variety of different modalities, I create a treatment plan that helps build on your presenting goals.

I am specialized in trauma, grief and loss and couples therapy.

8. WHAT CAN A FARMER EXPECT IN THEIR SESSION WITH YOU?

Anyone who comes to session to expect to be heard. I will listen and I will ask questions to explore thoughts and emotions deeper. I want you to learn about yourself through my work with you. When you come to session, we will build on your strengths and give you tools to help continue to grow outside of session.

9. WHAT WORDS WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOU?

Caring, empathetic, compassionate, driven.

Some would call me a sponge because I like to learn. I am always listening or reading to learn and understand the challenges or new tools that can be used in sessions.

10. And finally, what’s the one piece of advice that you would recommend to someone who’s struggling with their mental health?

You are not alone! At some point, each one of us in this world will have an experience with their mental health. You got this! The hardest part of the journey is reaching out and making an appointment.
