THERAPIST NETWORK MEMBER INTERVIEW: Joanne Prysunka

Joanne Prysunka

1. why did you want to join the Therapist network at AgKnow?

I greatly respect our Alberta producers and can make a difference in their lives and communities. Our ag producers feed the world and deserve relatable and effective support in difficult and stressful times.

2. What is your connection to farming?

I grew up on a mixed farm near Olds, Alberta, and we raised our sons on the family farm. In my former career in finance, I spent over twenty-five years working with producers throughout central and southern Alberta. When I transitioned to my career as a counsellor, I aimed to provide mental health care to people in the agricultural industry.

3. Why does having good mental health on the farm matter?

If you feel better about yourself, dealing with people and making decisions will be much easier. Therapy doesn't have to be unlimited sessions. Think of it like a tune-up to help you gain perspective and skills and optimize your well-being.

4. FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR ISSUES FACING FARMERS TODAY?

Unexpected disruptions to their operations that are beyond their control, caused by weather, markets, regulations, and disease. Operational stressors caused by finances, family dynamics, labour and business changes such as expansion, ownership transition, or diversification.

5. HOW CAN GOING TO THERAPY HELP A FARMER WHO IS STRUGGLING WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH?

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Therapy can help reduce the symptoms that affect your relationships, ability to work, and quality of life.

6. HOW CAN YOU HELP A FARMER WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH? WHY SHOULD THEY CHOOSE YOU, WHAT CAN YOU OFFER THEM?

I will create a safe space for you to express your thoughts and emotions, make sense of what is going on, and collaboratively develop effective strategies to move forward. Connecting with and talking with someone who knows and understands agriculture reduces the burden you might feel. Meeting with me is confidential and private. I will accommodate your schedule and production season to connect with you when, where and how it is most convenient.

7. what is your preferred style of therapy? Do you have any specializations?

I am relational and practical. This means my focus is on building a relationship where you feel trust, respect, and understanding. Partnering with you in developing practical solutions is a big part of our work together. I use a variety of therapeutic techniques, including EMDR, ACT, and CBT, to customize an approach that works for you.

8. WHAT CAN A FARMER EXPECT IN THEIR SESSION WITH YOU?

We will focus on getting to know one another and on what you want from therapy. I will provide guidance based on evidence-based therapeutic practices using understandable, plain language and treatment that takes into account your feedback on the process, our relationship, and your well-being.

9. WHAT WORDS WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOU?

I am humble, relatable, and nonjudgmental. I bring my whole self into our counselling sessions, including my sense of humour.

10. And finally, what’s the one piece of advice that you would recommend to someone who’s struggling with their mental health?

Think of your mental health like you would your combine or feed wagon. If it were to break down and you didn't know how to repair it, you would call someone. This same approach applies to your mental well-being. Having someone who truly cares and wants to relieve the weight you are carrying makes a massive difference in feeling less alone and tackling life.
